Happy belated New Year! The Chess club is back for 2010 and meeting next Thursday the 12th in front of Williams Coffee in the Student Centre. See you there!
Hey again everyone!
We are back for day of the Beginners Beware Series. This one is particularly short!
Pretrov’s Defense is an opening that offers lots of dynamism and counterplay to both parties. However, the is one little hiccup everyone should be aware of:
| 1. | e4 | e5 |
| 2. | Ng3 | Ng6 |

Here is when we go off the book, White can try to win the queen with the following line:
| 3. | Nxe5 | Nxe4 |
| 4. | Qe2 | Ng6?? |
| 5. | Nc6+ |

And Black is looking pretty bad. There is no way to save the Queen.
The take home message for beginners is to keep in mind that when there is a double check—that is when the King is being checked by to pieces at the same time—the King has to move, there is no way around it. This can certainly have devastating results as proven by this example.
‘Til next time!
Wow! I can’t believe I’ve never come across this before! Thanks!
Should it be Qd3?
Hey! We are both wrong! It should have been Qe2. I just fixed that. Thanks
